Especially in documents distributed electronically, it sometimes makes sense to include web links or, in some cases, just links. Links are a standard feature in almost all modern documents, but in Word this feature is a bit inconvenient to use.

So let's go through in detail how to add links.

Recommendation: Name the links

Sometimes you see documents with web addresses as links. The average reader may not mind this, because he can skip the link. For the user of a screen reader, the situation is complicated because the program reads the address text: “aitch tee tee pee es colon...”.

To this end, it is a good idea to name all links so that the web address does not appear in the document.

However, if the address is short and it is a short and concise site name such as facebook.com or google.fi, it can sometimes be left visible. In this case, however, the text should not include the other parts of the www link, in particular the “https://"” part.

Recommendation: The usual blue underlined links

The layout of links should prefer the typical underlining. It is also often clear that the links are blue, as usual, so that readers can easily distinguish them.

Task: Add a link to a web page

A link, or more formally a hyperlink, is a reference to a web page. Such a link can also point to another file or to another point in the current document.

You can either type the network address directly or copy it from the address bar of your browser. If you type or copy a link, add a space or Enter after it to turn it into a hyperlink.

Links are a good way to draw the attention of the reader. He or she can easily access the address in question from your document.

Highlight the text “Self Authoring” in the document and turn it into a link to https://selfauthoring.com.
