Table of Contents
After the page numbers, the table of contents is the next natural entity to clarify the structure of the document. Because you have used heading styles in your document, Word can create a table of contents for you automatically. Another advantage of Word's automatically generated table of contents is that it updates at the click of a button when you add new headings to your document.
The layout of the table of contents should be such that there is a clear distinction between the list and the content of the document itself. We make the distinction here by putting the table of contents on its own page.
Finally, we'll look at how to format your table of contents heading correctly.
Guide
### Updating the table of contents
The table of contents is not automatically updated when you edit a document. It has to be updated separately each time. Updating should therefore always be a habit, whenever you have edited the table of contents. See the section below for instructions, Info: Updating the table of contents .
The Objective
A table of contents has been added at the beginning of the document, on its own page. The layout is done by adding a page break to the document. The template also includes the completion an additional task to design the style of the table of contents heading.

### Shortcut key

Nice
Adding a page break
Move the cursor to the beginning of the heading following the table of contents.
Add a page break by clicking on the button Page Break in the Pages group on the Insert tab. Alternatively, you can use the Ctrl+Enter key command.
Deleting a page break
If you later want to remove the page break, place the cursor at the end of the page and remove the page break
by clicking with the mouse in front of it and remove it with the Delete key.
Extra task: Style the heading of the table of contents
The heading of a table of contents does not appear in the table of contents. For that, it has its own style: TOC Heading . Edit the heading to adjust it with the other headings in the document.
Nice
### Edit the style of the table of contents heading
First, move the cursor to the heading of the table of contents. This makes it easier to find a style when Word highlights the active style.
Search the **TOC Heading ** style by clicking on the **Styles ** button in the menu in the **Styles ** group on the **Home ** tab. In the menu that opens, the desired style is highlighted, if the cursor is on the heding of the table of contents.
Right-click on the style button and select **Modify **. Edit the style to match the one you edited for the **Heading 1 ** style.
Info: Updating the table of contents
