Page Numbers

The use of page numbers is one of the basic features of long documents. Page numbering is usually also supported by displaying the total number of pages in connection with the page numbers. In a normal office use, the prints are not stapled together. In this case, it is much clearer to have the total number of pages on each page in addition to the page number.

The natural place for the page number is either in the header or footer.

Page number and total number of pages are inserted in Word as so-called fields. The fields can be used to display many types of information in a document. Fields are basically places where Word adds content based on some rules. For example, in the page number field, Word always writes the number of each page.
