Screen Capture Video

You can make a screen recording directly with PowerPoint. “Screen recording” is a video where you record your own use on the screen. You can also add a voice-over to the screen recording.

Screen recording is a good feature, especially when the material you need to show exists in other windows and programs. Sometimes with a short video, you can describe something very challenging to explain in words. Slides become clearer by combining images and video.

Next, let's practice creating screen recordings with PowerPoint. Finally, we will also get to learn about the subtitling of videos.

Downloading the base file

In the subtitling exercise, you can use the pre-made file video_subtitles.vtt.

Mac: Screen capture functionality

Sadly, in the macOS version of PowerPoint, there is no functionality for screen captures. Instead, you can use a built-in tool of your Mac computer. We got learned to use it in the **Mac users: Screenshot and screen capture** Email and Outlook-chapter.

After you’ve captured your screen with that tool, you can add it to your presentation.

Task: Create a screen capture for the slide

Create a short screen recording into a slide, about a topic of you choice. For example, you can make a video where you go through some of the course material and share your thoughts.

You can also make a soundless video if you don't have a microphone.

1. Choosing the window you want to capture

First, navigate to the window from which you are making the screen recording, because when you start recording, the program automatically jumps to the previous window. So, for example, go to the web browser window where you have the course open from the point you want.

Go back to the PowerPoint presentation to the slide where the recording will be placed. You can use the keyboard shortcut Alt+Tab mentioned in Using Multiple Windows Efficiently.

2. Starting the recording and recording options

When you start recording, you're asked the following:

The exact area you want to be recorded
Do you want sounds in your recording

Start recording by navigating to the tab **Record**, then to the group **Record**, and clicking **Screen Recording**.

You will automatically go to the window you were in before starting the recording, and a small box will open at the top of the window where you can choose to start recording. First, select the area to be recorded by clicking Select Area and selecting the area you want.

Now start recording by pressing Record.

3. End recording

You can end the recording by using the keyboard shortcut Win+Shift+Q.

Formatting the screen recording

The recording will be automatically placed on the slide from which you started it. The instructions for formatting the video clip are in the Make the Presentation More Interesting with a Video chapter.

Saving a screen capture as a video

The video is saved with the presentation, even if it was not saved separately. However, if you need the video elsewhere, you can save it by right-clicking on the video and selecting Save Media as. The file is saved in MP4 format.

Save the file as a text file and name it so that it ends .vtt. Make sure that the value in Encoding is UTF‑8. In the Save as type menu, choose All Filest as the value.

Extra task: Add subtitles to the video

If you want, you can add subtitles to the recording you just made, as an additional task. Now, you shouldn't strive for perfection the first time: It's enough to have a couple of text passages in the video. You can add subtitles to all videos in your presentation, except for online videos.

Adding subtitles consists of two steps:

Creating a separate subtitle file. In this exercise, you can use the pre-made VTT file or create your own. Creation will be taught later in Learn: Creating a subtitle file
Attaching subtitles to the video

Subtitles can be activated using a separate subtitle button in the video. A menu opens, and you can choose the subtitles you want to show by clicking on them.
