Editing and Designing the Appearance of the Presentation

PowerPoint allows you to edit the appearance of all slides at once. Visually, a good layout does miracles in terms of the interestingness and readability of the presentation. On this page, you will learn the basics of a few functions related to editing and formatting the layout:

### Format the background

In addition to changing the whole theme of a presentation (the instructions in the 1st PowerPoint course), you can also change the background of a single slide or all slides, by navigating to the Design tab, and clicking the Format Background button in the Customize group. The window Format Background will open to the right side of the window, where you can make the edits.

You can change the slide’s background color or assign a gradient color to it. You can also use a picture, texture, or pattern as a background. With the Hide background graphics option you can remove the background images of a slide. Select Apply to All if you want the changes to apply to all slides.

Task: Change the fonts and colors of the presentation

Change the fonts and colors of the entire presentation to your liking. For example, you can choose a color palette called Blue and a font collection called Office.

Task: Get to know the slide master

By using the slide master, you can, for example, change the colors of all headings and bullet point styles. In the slide master, you can also choose to edit only slides with a specific layout.

Find the slide master by navigating to the Master Views group, then the tab View, and clicking Slide Master.

### A review of the slide master

The presentation's different layouts, wallpapers, sizes and locations of the placeholders, presentation colors, and fonts come from the presentation's Slide Master.

In the slide master view, there is the Slide Master tab, with the Close Master View button on the far right for returning to the normal mode.

The first (largest) of the slide thumbnails on the left is the master slide, and changes to it affect the layouts of all the slides below unless otherwise specified in the individual layout.

Other thumbnails below the master slide are layouts ("page types"), and changes to them only affect that specific layout.

Layouts can be added and removed.

Layouts are individual "page types" that are used in the presentation.
