Transitions and Animations

Transitions refer to how you want the changing of the slides to be displayed in the slide show.

Animations can be added to the selected object on the slide. The purpose of the animations is to enliven the presentation and to direct the viewer's attention to a specific area. You should also consider what you want to emphasize when adding animations. Here we will familiarize ourselves with how animations are implemented in practice. There are many different options available. If you want to animate the show well, it takes a lot of time, so it's not worth adding them in a hurry. However, it is good to know a few useful and reasonably quick animations that can be used in SmartArt graphics and charts to highlight the message.

Animations are a good way in situations where you want, for example, to show different information step by step on the same slide.

The Objective

After completing this chapter, all the slides of the presentation have a transition. In this case, all the slide thumbnails on the left of your PowerPoint screen will show a small star beside them.

You'll also get to make an animation to slide 4, which will show in the thumbnails as a set of numbers above the slide. Afterward, the slide might look like the one below, where the animation has four stages, all the people becoming visible one by one.

You can add, remove and time transitions on the Transitions tab.

Choose a transition you like from the Transition to This Slide group.

There are many different options available, from subtle to exciting and dynamic. It would be best if you kept your composure with the transitions, though, so that the presentation does not become too restless.

The transition is removed by choosing the first of the options, i.e. None.

With the **Preview** button you can see how the transition looks like.

### Transition options

To some transitions, you can add different effects. For example, with the transition Wipe you can choose its direction.

By pressing Effect Options you can make more specific formatting to a transition.

Timing

In the Timing group, you can, for example, set a specific transition to repeat in all the slides. Click Apply To All and you notice that all the slides now have the same transition (a star beside every thumbnail).

The default is that one proceeds to the next slide by clicking, but you can also determine a specific showing time for a slide before the presentation moves along automatically.

Task: Add an animation

Add an entrance animation to slide 4, so that each project member appears in the picture when you click your mouse.

You can add, remove and time animations on the Animations tab.

Adding animation to a specific area

Select the SmartArt object and choose the entrance animation of your choosing from the Animation group. You could choose one by clicking on it on the ribbon, but at this point, you should click on the More button in the lower right corner of the ribbon, which lets you see all the animations, grouped by type. Choose one to your liking from the group Entrance.

Animation groups:

#### Entrance	Animation brings the selected object to the slide with a click of your mouse.
#### Emphasis	When the object is on the slide, animation is applied to it.
#### Exit	Animation removes the selected object from the slide with a click.
#### Motion Paths	The object moves around the slide according to the selected motion path.

Effect options

As you added an animation to the SmartArt object, number 1 appeared in its upper left corner.

This means that the SmartArt object will become visible in the Slide Show with the first click of your mouse.

Try it by entering Slide Show by pressing Shift+F5.

You can set the charts and SmartArt objects to build step by step in Effect Options.

Choose One by One, so numbers from 1 to 4 will appear in the upper left corner of the slide.

This means that the object will build on the slide with four clicks. Try it by entering the Slide Show by pressing Shift+F5.

Extra task: Animate the chart to build step by step

Add an animation to the chart on slide 5 and edit it so that the axes of the chart and the first bars (Germany) are visible when the presentation enters the slide. After this, the columns about Sweden will be displayed with a mouse click, and finally, the columns about Finland will be displayed with the third click.

The final slide looks like this with animation annotations:

Adding a serial animation to a chart

When you add an entrance animation to a chart, you can specify how the chart will build into the slide.

In the menu Effect Options choose By Series. This way, the chart will build in the slide show in steps described below.

#### Step 1: The start of the slideshow

There is no chart on the slide.

#### Step 2: Mouse click

The axes for the first set appear on the slide.

And with the next clicks, the rest of the sets appear.

Modifying the animation

Modify the animation so that when the slide appears, step 3 is already visible.

#### Step 3: Mouse click

The first set appears to the slide.

Navigate to the **Animations** tab, then the **Advanced Animation** group, and select **Animation Pane**. This way a window opens, with which you can modify the animation.

The contents of the animation are visible in a compact form.

Click on the bar below the symbol for the first step, so that the different animation steps appear and you can make changes to them.

The number in front of the animation steps tells you how many mouse clicks the step takes to build on the slide. Define steps **1** and **2** to enter the slide simultaneously as the slide is displayed.

Select the step **1**, and specify it to appear on the slide without any additional clicks (choice **Start With Previous**).

Select the next step, which has now became step 1, and specify the same as for the previous step.

Now, the first click will bring up set 2.

Task: Inspect the animations in Slide Show and make sure the animations are set as desired

Enter the Slide Show with the keyboard shortcut Shift+F5, so that the slide show starts from the selected slide.
