Drawing with Shapes

In the previous chapter, we learned freehand drawing. Now we'll draw some more, but this time with pre-made shapes. Shape refers to pre-made patterns and lines. These are especially popular for creating various charts.

The Objective

We will continue working on Bringing_Presentation_to_Life.pptx and especially the “Shapes” slide. We will be making different kinds of shapes containing text and arrows. Afterward, your slide might look something like this:

Add a circle and an oval to your slide. You can add the forms at this point even by clicking or dragging. You can also try the Lock Drawing Mode function.

### Adding a shape

Add a shape by navigating to the tab Insert and then to the group Illustrations. Then click Shapes.

The chosen shape can be added by clicking on the slide or by pressing the mouse button down and streching the shape with the mouse.

When clicking is used, the shape will be regular. For example, a rectangle will be a square, and an oval will be a round circle. If you want to draw the same shape multiple times in succession, right-click on it when selecting the shape from the insertopn palette and choose **Lock Drawing Mode**. When you have added your desired amount of shapes, you can exit the Drawing mode by pressing `Esc`.

Task: Add text into the shapes

Write "A circle" inside the circle and "An oval" inside the oval.

Task: Stretch the circle

Resize the circle by stretching it, but ensure it remains a circle. Did the center of the circle move? Undo the resizing and try stretching the circle by grabbing the corner point and stretching while holding both Shift and Ctrl keys down. What happened?

Add a horizontal arrow to the slide
Add a line that connects the circle and the oval (choose Elbow connector)

### Adding a line

You always add a line by stretching.

Hold Shift down while stretching the line. This way, you can quickly draw straight lines, vertical or horizontal.

Adding an Elbow connector

You can add an Elbow connector, which "grabs" a shape and stays connected to it even if you move the shape.

As you add the connector and hover your mouse cursor over the shape, you will see all the handles the connector can attach to. Start drawing the line from one of these handles.

As you move the shape, you can see the connector carries.

The shape of a connector

If you click on the connector, you can see small yellow dots along it. By grabbing and dragging the dots with your mouse, you can change the shape of the connector. You can also grab the end of the connector and move it to another place.

When you look at the set of shapes, can you imagine any situation where you could use a function like this? Could one, perhaps, make a mindmap using these functions or shed light on different organizational structures?

### Selecting multiple shapes

To apply the function to several shapes at once, you must first select them.

You can select several shapes by first selecting a single shape and then holding Shift down while clicking through the rest of the shapes you want
You can stretch a selection area around the selected shapes using the mouse, so all shapes that remain inside the area become selected

Grouping shapes

You can format and edit shapes by using the Shape Format tab.

Select the shapes you want to group, and navigate to the **Shape Format** tab, then the **Arrange** group. Here, click **Group** and choose **Group**.

You can degroup the shapes by clicking Ungroup.
