SmartArts with Images

SmartArt graphic objects also include options to add images. Images enable rich visual presentation.

Downloading the base file

Download Personnel.zip, which contains the image options for this task. Note that the images cannot be added to the presentation straight from the zip file. Fear not, though; we will go through this at A Task: Extract a zip file.

The Objective

Continue working on the slide 6 of the SmartArts_videos_and_presentation_view.pptx.

Crop the images neatly so that all of them are similarly cropped with people’s faces visible.

Task: Extract a zip file

Images cannot be added directly from a zip file (compressed folder), even though they appear as separate files. You can open a single image from the zip file and save it, but extracting the entire folder at once is most convenient.

Click the right button of your mouse on Personnel.zip, and choose Extract All (the term for extracting differentiates depending on the Windows version you're using. Most likely, the right button is either "Extract all" or "Unzip all").

Choose the location you want to save the new file. As a default, the system chooses the same folder as the zip folder is in.

How to tell a zip folder from a normal folder

You can tell an actual folder from a zip folder by the zipper going over the folder icon. If there is a zipper - it's a zip folder.

(Again, this might change depending on the Windows version you're using.)

Navigate to slide 6, choose the text, and turn it into a SmartArt object with images.

Note that if you still want to change the SmartArt object to another one, do it before adding the images; otherwise, the images may be distorted, and you will have to add them again.

Add an image for each person using images you searched yourself or from the folder you downloaded and extracted.

Task: Crop the images by moving and zooming them

The image is not always suitable for its supposed location, but you can move the image and change its size using the cropping function. For example, in our presentation the image of Vincent requires requres resizing and moving so that his face shows clearly.

When you have chosen the image, navigate to the **Picture Format** tab, then the **Size** group, and click **Crop**.

Grab the image with the mouse cursor and move it to your desired position. The mouse pointer appears as a cross-headed arrow when you are moving the picture. Crop mode is deactivated by clicking outside the image.

Changing the image size (zooming)

In some images, the essential content is in the details. In this case, it is better to enlarge the images, i.e., zoom them.

In the image cropping mode, you should change the image size by grabbing the corner handle of the image with the mouse and dragging it outwards. Otherwise, the aspect ratio of the image will be distorted.

You may still need to move the zoomed image so that it is in the right place.

Problem: The image appears stretched

If the image’s aspect ratio is contorted, you can delete the whole image and add it again.

You can also fix the contortion by clicking the image, navigating to the Picture Format tab, then the Size group, opening the Crop menu, and choosing Fill in it.

After this, you can move the image again to fit the slot.

Guide

Remember to only change the size of the image by dragging its **corner**. Otherwise the aspect ratio of the image will contort.

Note: In older versions of PowerPoint, you also need to press Shift on your keyboard while dragging the corner.
