Creating Your Own Document Template

A document template is a ready-made document base. Word has several predefined document templates that Word offers you when you create a new document. Normally we start with the template Blank document. Word allows you to create and use your own document templates.

Document templates can significantly enhance the efficiency of Word. As a student, you may have, for example, a ready-made template for your exercises. Companies often use various document templates for different purposes, and these templates are usually designed to align with the company’s brand identity.

A document template always opens as a new file, so you cannot accidentally make changes to it.

A document template can be saved in any folder, and when you double-click on a template file, you are always starting a new file.

Most commonly, templates are stored in a template folder defined in Word, so you don't have to search for a document template in separate folders, since it becomes selectable via the New option in the File menu.

The Objective

We will create a document template My document template.dotx, which you should save to your computer. (Note the dotx extension of the file.)

We are going to create a separate folder for templates and configure Word to locate the document template from there.

Mac: A folder for templates

Mac computers differ significantly from Windows computers in terms of the file system. For example, you can create a Templates folder under Documents.
